The Danforth, Canada
Maciej Mońka
Displayed: times. The Danforth, also known as Toronto, Ontario's Greektown, refers to the business area along Danforth Avenue between Broadview and Pape Avenues. Named after Asa Danforth, an American contractor who designed Queen Street and Kingston Road — other streets in the city — the area is known for its architecture dating back to as early as 1910 and for its number of Greek restaurants and stores. The area was one of the major settlement areas of early Greek immigrants to Toronto. More recently, the area has experienced a wave of gentrification as higher-priced restaurants and bars, as well as European-style public squares have moved in. For three days each August, the streets of the neighbourhood are transformed, as Danforth Avenue is closed off for the "Taste of the Danforth." The event is a celebration of Greek food and culture, and attracts 200,000 people to the area to enjoy the food, music, and other amusements.
