Egypt is a surprisingly good place to buy gold. You must know that any item is sold by the gram and not by the piece. Ask the price of the gram of the day always before buying. Try some shops first and then judge by yourself the current rate. Never buy in the first shop, rather try several. You can always go back to the first one. Egyptians are quite happy for you to bargain (actually it's expected). This goes for silver as well.
