Displayed: times. In the centre of Tirana is Skanderbeg Square. Although itÂ’s not the economical heart anymore it is still like the "city centre". The equestrian statue of the national hero Skanderbeg is on the southern side of the square which is dominated by the buildings of the Opera and the National Historic Museum. It makes a good starting point to explore the city and take a walking tour.

I visited Albania in September 2005. Skanderbeg Square is interesting, but not very well kept up. I agree that it's a good starting point to explore the city. A walking tour is a good idea, since driving around the city is nearly impossible. The city's infrastructure has not kept up with an incredible influx of cars! It takes a long time to get anywhere at certain times of day. Cars parked along the narrow streets are a huge problem, and somehow no one seems to have thought of the idea of a parking garage! A few of them, well placed, would relieve at least some of the problem.
My suggestion to anyone going to Albania is to avoid Tirana as much as possible. You have to land there, but after that, get out as soon as possible and go somewhere else. Tirana is dirty, noisy and crowded, and the rest of the country is prettier, friendlier and more relaxed. Whereever you go, hire a local guide you can trust. We were fortunate to be visiting "family".
