Dip Nets $150.00, United States

This is no joke.....I saw several places selling dipnets for $150.00 each!! I think it's a crazy price and the $150.00 price might have been for out-of-towners. The Dipnetting is allowed for all Alaska Residents. Certain areas are opened after enough salmon have escaped to allow for enough fish for spawning to have great returns year after year. There are size restrictions on the size of the net that is allowed. And I believe the maximum catch is 25 salmon per family member. The way they dipnet is to usually wear Chest Waders and wade out as far as you can without filling up your waders with water and hold the dipnet into the current and wait until you feel some action in your net then give the net a bit of a twist so the salmon can't escape and then walk backwards out of the water and dump the fish on the beach to a waiting family member then do the same process all over again. The family member would bonk the fish in the head to keep it from suffering and then either poke a gill plate to bleed it or fillet it right on the spot and put the fillets on ice in a cooler. We happened to go to the mouth of the Kenai River on the opening day of dipnetting and the beach was packed with locals filling up the coolers with fish. It sure looked like a great way for a family to have fun and fill up the freezer for winter all at the same time!! Most of them were not using these $150.00 nets. Many were just homemade and seemed to work just as well!!
