Lomé, estimated population 700,000 (1998), is the capital of Togo. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, Lomé is the country's administrative and industrial center, and the chief port. The city exports coffee, cocoa, copra, and palm kernels. It also has an oil refinery. Lomé is also the only place in Togo where you'll find public access to the Internet (there are reliable Internet cafés starting to open.) Lomé became the capital of the German colony of Togo in 1897. The University of Benin is located in Lomé. Togo's main airport is outside the city. The tallest building in Lomé and in all of Togo is the 2 Fevrier Sofitel Hotel building.
