Heroes' Square, Hungary

Description:
Laid out in 1896 to mark the thousandth anniversary of the Magyar conquest, the Heroe's Square is appropriately grand. The Millenary Monument in the centre of the sqare consists of a 36-metres-high column topped by the figure of Archangel Gabriel who, according to a legend, appeared to Stephen in a dream and offered him the crown of Hungary. Around the base are Prince Arpad and his chieftains, who led the Magyar tribes into the Carpathian Basin. As a backdrop to this, a semicircular colonnade displays statues of Hungary's most illustrius leaders, from King Stephen to Kossuth. During the brief Republic of Councils, when the country was governed by revolutionary soviets, the square was decked out in red banners, and the column enclosed in a huge red obelisk. Most recently, it was the setting for the ceremonial reburial of Nagy and other murdered leaders of the Uprising (including an empty coffin to represent the "unknown insurgent"), on June 16, 1989 - an event which symbolised the dawning of a new era in Hungary.
