St Stephen's Basilica, Hungary

Displayed: times.
Description:
Building of the Basilica originally began in 1851 under the supervision of József Hild, continued after his death under Miklós Ybl, and was finally completed by Josef Krauser in 1905. At the inaugural ceremony, Emperor Franz Josef was seen to glance anxiously at the dome, whose collapse during a storm in 1868 had naturally set progress back. At 96 meters, it is exactly the same height as the dome of Parliament - both allude to the date of the Magyars' arrival in Hungary.
It's worth going inside to view the mummified hand of Saint Stephen, in a chapel behind the altar. There is also a one-room treasury of chalices and monstrances.
Address: V. Szent Istvan ter.
Directions:
Centre of Pest near Metro station Deak Ferenc ter (all lines)
