Description:
The Propylaea is the monumental gateway or portal leading to the entrance to the Acropolis. Composed of Pentelic white marble, it was constructed by the architect Mnesikles in 438 B.C.
A marvel of architectural achievement, the Propylaea consists of a central portal with two adjoining Doric stoa wings. On the podium to the right of the gate stood the Temple of Athena Nike, and to the left was the Pinakotheke.
Directions:
City center, on top of the Acropolis
