The island is 63 kilometers long, 45 kilometers wide and covers 2150 square kilometers. It is situated in Indian Ocean, as a part of the archipelago of Mascareignes. The terrain is mostly rugged and mountainous; there are fertile lowlands along coast. Reunion has an active volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, which rises more than 2611 meters above sea level. A mountain range peaks in Piton des Neiges (Hook of Snows) in 3069 m.
