Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) is a developing country on the western coast of Africa. The official capital is Yamoussoukro, but Abidjan is the largest city, the main commercial center, and is where the U.S. Embassy is located. Cote d'Ivoire is a republic whose constitution provides for separate branches of government under a strong president, who as the head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces selects the prime minister, the head of the government. The country has essentially been divided since a 2002 coup attempt became a rebellion. New Forces (ex-rebels) control the northern 60 percent of the country. In January 2003, the country's major political parties and the rebel groups agreed to a power-sharing national reconciliation government, which included rebel representatives. They agreed to cooperate on legislative reforms and to resolve their political differences prior to major elections scheduled for late 2005. However, the full government of national reconciliation has not met since Ivorian armed forces attacked rebel bases in the north in November 2004. The envisioned legislative reforms remain incomplete. Tourist facilities in and near Abidjan, the commercial capital, are good; accommodations elsewhere are limited in quality and availability. Read the Department of State Background Notes on Cote dÂ’Ivoire at http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2846.htm for additional information.
