Strumica is located at an altitude of 240m above sea level. At Mt. Belasica close to Strumica, the famous battle in 1014 between the Emperor Samuel and the Byzantine Emperor Vasilia II took place. Today it is the centre of the Strumica basin, watered by the river Strumica, and its tributary-the Struma. Fruit and Mediterranean crops are cultivated there, such as: afion cotton, tobacco, "susam", peanut and "anason", the sort that is very rare, used for making of well-known brandy "mastika".
