Repetek Desert Reserve, Turkmenistan

Patric Scott
Displayed: times.Imagine a place that has air temperatures of over 50°C and sand at a soul-scorching 70°C. Now add to this a thousand-plus species of insects, some tarantulas, cobras, large black scorpions and 1.5m-long, prehistoric-looking monitors. All of these critters are objects of study at the Repetek Desert Research Centre, which boasts a visitors' centre, museum and herbarium.
