Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano was founded by Constantine in the 4th century. It is the first Christian basilica constructed in Rome. This is the city's official cathedral and one of the most important in the Christian world. The heads of Saints Peter and Paul are kept in the tabernacle over the papal altar. Palazzo Laterano was the papal residence before the pope moved to Avignon for a short time in the 14th century.
