Zanzibar - Shirazi Ruins, Tanzania

Shirazi Ruins are found on the southern end of Tumbatu Island and date from the 12th Century. The ruins are those of an ancient town that contains 40 stone houses. It was recorded by an Arab geographer in the 13th century that the Muslim people of Zanzibar Island were attacked and then retreated to Tumbatu Island where the people were apparently also Muslim. It is thought that the ruins were abandoned early in the 16th century.
