Mangapwani Slave Cave lies clightly further north up the coast from the Coral Cavern. Although called a “cave”, it was actually a man-made cell consisting of two of rectangular pits, dug from the coral limestone and originally covered with coral rag, laid on mangrove poles. A sunken pathway provided a concealed access to the beach. Boats coming from the mainland would unload their human cargo nearby on the beaches, and the slaves would be kept in the Slave Cave until taken further.

With a man-made stair case for easy access to tourists, this natural cave has the rare feature of fresh water pools. Ledgend has it the caves entrance had been co thickly covered with vegetation that its existance had not been known untill a herds boy lost a goat he was sheperding and on following the sound of its crie discoverd the caves entrance.

The claustrophobicly humid air is a horrific reminder of what the prisioners of this cave must have gone through. A guided tour from the main entrance to the small opening where it is believed the slaves escaped is not only a physical challenge but a mental stuggle to cope with the cave spiders, bats deep rock gorgesand the ledgend of the "friendly" pyhon but well worth re-living their terrifying journey to freedom.
