Zanzibar - Mangapwani Slave Cave, Tanzania

Patric Scott
Displayed: times.Mangapwani Slave Cave lies clightly further north up the coast from the Coral Cavern. Although called a “cave”, it was actually a man-made cell consisting of two of rectangular pits, dug from the coral limestone and originally covered with coral rag, laid on mangrove poles. A sunken pathway provided a concealed access to the beach. Boats coming from the mainland would unload their human cargo nearby on the beaches, and the slaves would be kept in the Slave Cave until taken further.
