Stone Town is located on the coast west of Zanzibar New City. It is said to be the only functioning ancient town in East Africa. It has narrow streets, alleyways and fascinating historical city. Most of the buildings that exist today in Stone Town originate from the 19th Century. n the rest of the island the houses are built using the traditional wattle and mud daub. In the Stone Town the buildings are made from small blocks of coral limestone bound with a mixture of lime and laterite. Unfortunately erosion has taken its toll on many of these buildings. There are several places of interest within Stone Town, including: the Market, the Old Dhow Harbour, Livingstone House, the Old Dispensary, the Peoples Palace, the House of Wonders and Jamutiri Gardens, and the Old Arab Fort.
