Rubondo Island National Park is in the northwest of Tanzania on Lake Victoria and can be reached from Mwanza 150 km away to the east. It is the only National Park in Lake Victoria. The major animal attraction of the island is the abundance of sitatunga, an aquatic antelope that cannot be found in any other Park in Tanzania. Although relatively small, Rubondo Island consists of a variety of habitats ranging from savannah and open woodland to papyrus swamps and dense evergreen forests. Deserted sandy beaches nestle against a cloak of virgin forest which is host to a rich abundance of mammals, reptiles, plant life and birds. Visitors to the island are sure to see hippo, chimpanzee, elephant, giraffe, crocodile, otter, bushbuck, vervet monkey, and the omnipresent sitatunga while Wide-spotted genet cat, Marsh mongoose or the tiny suni are more difficult to spot.
