Kenya - Lake Bogoria, Kenya

Kevin Green
Displayed: times.Lake Bogoria National Park is situated 50 kilometres north of Nakuru in the Rift Valley. Lake Bogoria is situated at the bottom of a trough at the base of the Ngendelel escarpment. The shores are littered with huge lava boulders, evidence of intense volcanic activity, and the surrounding soils contain high concentration of carbonates. The water is very highly alkaline, supporting no fish life at all. Along the shores of the lake are mainly grasslands, and throughout the rest of the national park the vegetation is mainly bush land with acacia woodland, with small patches of riverine forest. Lake Bogoria is best known for the flamingos and other water birds that gather at its shores and its spectacular setting beneath the sheer 600 metre cliffs of the Ngendelel escarpment. The area is also known for the steam jets and thermal geysers found here that can shoot spumes of hot spray up to 6 metres high.
