Lamu city is located on the island of Lamu, part of an archipelago of islands off the northern coast of Kenya. It is the oldest active Swahili coastal town. On this island there are no cars and the main forms of transport are the dhow and the donkey. The people of the island have an easy and relaxed curiosity with whatever comes. This area provides a combination of natural and architectural beauty. Well worth paying a visit to on the island are: the Donkey sanctuary, the Lamu Museum, the Lamu Meat Market and Fort Lamu. Buildings were built close together so that the streets remain cool despite the midday heat - and as a result the streets are narrow and winding with barely enough rooms for two donkeys to pass.
