Gedi is situated approximately 16 kilometres south of the coastal town of Malindi, and lies approximately 90 kilometres northeast of Mombasa. The town of Gedi originates in the 12th Century AD and was rebuilt with new town walls in the 15th and 16th Centuries. The ruins now appear as a reclaimed lost citysince they are situated in 45 acres of forest which has grown all over them in the interim years. Gedi town itself was within an inner wall and consisted of a palace, three pillar tombs, a great mosque, many smaller mosques, and private houses. The surrounding primeval forest displays an interesting variety of plant life and a good chance of encountering wildlife especially in the early morning.
