From 1854 to 1997 Almaty was the capital of Kazakhstan. It was the most cosmopolitan city with shops, restaurants, hotels and casinos in Central Asia, bevore the government has moved the capital to the northern city of Astana (previously known as Aqmola), Almaty's future is uncertain.
