The East, centre and South provinces are distinct cultural groups, which include the Etons, Ewondos, Bulus, Yambassas and other. All of these people speak almost the same language that is closely associated with to that of Equatorial Guinea and parts of Gabon, Congo, and Central African Republic. Their meals include Saga; Cassava leaves, Ekok etc. They are also promoters of the Bikutsis music which today has cut an international figure for itself. . The South West and Littoral provinces constitute what can be described as the Sawa ethnic corridors . These two provinces are mostly cosmopolitan. Douala is the headquarter of the Littoral province and also the economic capital of Cameroon. Their cultural out fit is the Kaba Ngondo for the women and thick loin cloth white shirts and red hats for the men.
The inhabitants spread across ten provinces and over 50 divisions. English and French inherited from its two colonial masters are the two official languages spoken in the country, even though there are over two hundred indigenous languages representing five distinct ethnic groups. In the Northern Provinces, the Bororos, the Peulhs, the Baya's, Arab chaws, Kotokos share a common linguistic identity which is the fulfude. In terms of dresses, they wear the three-piece gown, sometimes with a turban. Their staple food is maize, sorghum rice and millet. It should be recalled that this people fall under the Sudanese ethnic group. In the west plateaux, grassfield corridor, a common practice organises the society into chiefdoms and kingdoms that are still powerful as in the colonial days. These institutions are the custodians of tradition and culture, still jealously preserved by them. Like their Northern counter parts they have a huge liking for polygamous marriages and the traditional leaders, enjoy the stature of semi gods by their people who often look up to them for blessings etc. More info on: inet01.cm.undp.org
