According to the Constitution, only Kazakh is a state language in the country. In reality, most people still communicate in Russian and do not know Kazakh. So, if you decide to study the local language you should start with Russian. Nevertheless, you will immediately make a Kazakh your friend if you say a few words in Kazakh.
