Hiking, Luxembourg

Shirley Goodmann
Displayed: times.Although small, Luxembourg has an extensive network of marked hiking and walking routes. Sometimes referred to as 'the green heart of Europe', almost one-third of the country consists of forests. The best areas for walking are in the north where the Müllerthal (also known as Luxembourg's 'Little Switzerland') and the Luxembourg Ardennes (known as Eisléck in the national language) offer spectacular rock formations, densely wooded forests and lush valleys (see also the Resorts & Excursions section). There are 171 official hiking routes (marked by a blue triangle) and 19 national footpaths (sentiers nationaux, marked by a yellow sign). The Youth Hostels footpath (marked by a white triangle) links together the country's 12 youth hostels. Maps of footpaths (circuits autopédestres) and hiking guides are readily available from bookshops and newsagents. Rock climbing is available near Berdorf in the Müllerthal region. Permission is required and can be obtained by writing to Eaux et Foręts, Diekirch, PO Box 30, L-920, Diekirch. More info on: luxembourg.airporthotelguide.com
