Displayed: times.Founded in 1819 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles as a British trading post, this well-placed town at the entrance to the Straits of Malacca soon grew into one of Asia's busiest ports, drawing people from far and wide. Conquered by the Japanese in 1942, Singapore briefly joined Malaysia in 1963 when the British left, but was expelled because of social unrest and political differences. It became independent on 9 August 1965.
