Tajikistan is a country of ancient culture and traditions. The role of culture in the achievement of peace and social reconciliation in Tajikistan has been great. National traditions have brought people together and formed the basis for a lasting peace. Tajik culture is unique in its own way; it requires development and preservation of national values. The most outstanding cultural event of 1999 was the celebration of the1100th anniversary of the Samanid State and the 8th anniversary of the Independence Day in Tajikistan. The Tajik nation sharing the common language, territory and culture was formed at the times of the Samanid rule (874-1005). This first state gave birth to civilization and governance of the following generations of Tajiks; and now, at the beginning of the third millennium, Tajikistan is known in the world as an independent country. A number of symposiums and international conferences took place during the celebration. The most prominent of them - the IV World Forum of Tajiks and foreign compatriots took place in Dushanbe. Tajiks from all over the world attended this event. Several conferences devoted to the "Samanid History, Civilization, and Culture" took place in Dushanbe, St. Petersburg and Iran, as well as in all districts and cities of the republic. New expositions devoted to the Independence Day were opened in the historical museum. They included exhibitions of implements, musical instruments, coins and clothing relating to the Samanid era. A book fair was organized with over 1,500 book samples devoted to the 1100th anniversary of the Samanid State. The exhibition was attended by over 700 people. The Ministry of Culture arranged a library competition "Charogi Khidoyat" (Light of Teaching) which included a number of meetings and conferences. The first prize was awarded to a library from Khudjand. The Ministry of Culture organized over 10 festivals, 8 international and national conferences. 189 new books were published in commemoration of this significant event. All these events strengthened the feeling of national pride, trust and unity. Thus, 62 districts took part in the national festival "Andaleb" (Nightingale). The festival was attended by 1.5 million people. 14 theaters and 240 actors participated in the theatrical festival "Parastu" (Swallow). The theatrical festival was attended by 10,000 people.
