Oooooh, Lake Chad! For years (well weeks at least) just the mention of Lake Chad was enough to send the shivers down our spines, not that we caught more than the merest glimpse of the lake even though according to the good old Michelin Map we drove round it's shore.

The checkpoints on the way out of Niger were helpfully positioned in the middle of a deep soft sand section, and nothing much really changed all the way round the lake! Sand,... More
