Travel story:
The Grandest Museum of Them All March 9, 2002
When the French Revolution struck in the late 18th century, the people beheaded their king and took over his palaces. The old palace of the Louvre became state property, and in 1793, the French government turned it into one of the world's first public art museums. Fabulous artwork that was once only seen by the king and court was now open to everyone. Outside, I.M. Pei's glass pyramid is the perfect modern contrast to the Baroque castle once ruled by an absolute monarch.
