Travel story: Standing Stones March 16, 2002

The Neolithic standing stones of Carnac are free of charge and open all year round. Very near our hotel was the largest field of megaliths -- the Alignements du Ménec. In the space of 2.5 miles were about 3,000 of these stones, all erected about 7,000 years ago. Why? How? Much like Stonehenge, no one really knows for sure.



They're laid out mostly in long, long rows, rather like tombstones. Some speculate that they are burial sites. Certainly, the dolmens in the area... More
