Having witnessed this ceremony a number of times; I can assure people of the authenticity of the pic and indeed of the whole ceremony. It is without doubt one of the real treasures of any visit to Sulawesi. Bloody; scary; in your face; it is a moving experience. It keeps families poor for years trying to save enough money to afford the costs involved. The deceased may be kept in a family home for some years to allow the family time for such a funeral.For the cost of a carton of smokes any person is welcome to attend and will be made to feel welcome. Custom demands that you are accompanied by a guide. Bull fights; cock fights....poobah!! you aint seen nothing unless you have experienced this.

Bukittinggi on the island of Sumatra

Leaving Singapore turned out to be a long day - I caught the 7:30 AM ferry for the 45-minute trip to Batam, an Indonesian island.
