I was on my way to Turkestan, in Kazakhstan, to visit the Yasawi Mausoleum. It is one of the best preserved of the many monuments built by Timur - the national hero of Uzbekistan. It was the last trip of my vacation and something I had been looking forward to the whole time.

I had a driver take me to the Uzbek-Kazakh border where I found a line of trucks a mile long and lots of people milling around. I was dropped at the last turn... More
