Of the 20,000 people, there were seven survivors found when the Vietnamese invaded in 1979. All others were tortured to death, including fourteen, who were found dead in their cells and now buried on the grounds of S21.

A former high school classroom. Prisoners were shackled to the bed and tortured in this room, usually by electric shock or lashes with wire.

The photograph on the wall was taken in 1979, on the day the prison was liberated. The man on the bed had been tortured to death.

In the former classrooms, the Khmer Rouge built cells for the prisoners. Most were 3ft in width.

The Khmer Rouge tortured and murdered young and old alike, from infants to the elderly -- although the middle-aged and elderly suffered the worst. Today, half the population of Cambodia is under the age of 20.
