Portmarnock is just underneath Malahide and it’s easily reached by Dublin Bus No. 32 or the DART. A note of caution though, the DART station is about 40 minutes walk away from the beach so I think it’s a better idea to take the bus to Portmarnock.

The first thing you’ll notice as you get down from the bus is the long stretch of white sandy beach. When we arrived we were blessed with good weather so the walk on the beach in low tide was a perfect way to relax on a Sunday afternoon. Halfway though the beach you can see a small Island called Ireland’s Eye which is a sock sea bird sanctuary with the ruins of a 6th century monastery.

The beach is very long but there’s a small catch to it; if you start walking along the beach you cannot exit out of the road because there’s a golf course on the inside of the beach. Even if you manage to walk the whole length of the beach you still cannot cross to the other side of the street because of the estuary which is very dangerous to cross, so the only alternative is to turn and walk back.

On our return back the weather changed as it so frequently does in Ireland and the place lost much of its lustre. After the long walk on the beach we sought refuge from the wind and rain at Lali’s Restaurant (Strand Road), which is an Italian family run restaurant with a good selection of pizza, pasta and seafood. The prices are moderate, the food is good and some of the staff is incredibly good looking.

[Sorry no photos of this place but I haven’t got a camera yet – still waiting for my first wage to come]
