Highlights of the Dar to Lilongwe stretch of Cycle to the Summit have included some super cycling and World Cup football action. We cycled through Mikumi National Park where we saw elephant, giraffe, zebra and buffalo, before crossing into Malawi to see first hand the famine situation that is featuring in the UK press. We also learned about the increasing problems associated with the AIDS epidemic. We are currently enjoying the hospitality and company of our friend Sutapa in Lilongwe. Over the next few days we will visit WaterAid and plan for the final stages of our journey to the Earth Summit in Johannesburg.

15th May 2002 - 29th May 2002 - Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar
We gave our bikes and legs a two week holiday as we relaxed in Dar Es Salaam, visited Zanzibar and saw some more of WaterAid's work. Zanzibar was superb. We swam with dolphins, hired motorbikes to explore the island, met some great people, ate some very nice seafood and drank cocktails while watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean …and then it was back on the bikes.
29th May 2002 - Dar Es Salaam to Chalinze - 84km
We left the heat of Dar and retraced our tracks towards Chalinze where we had been two weeks earlier. This was the first time on our trip where we have (intentionally) covered the same stretch of road twice. We passed the same stallholders selling everything from oranges to bamboo furniture and arrived at the C.O.S. petrol station where we had stayed before. Also, since the terrain became much more mountainous, memories of Ethiopia flooded back, although fortunately the beautiful scenery
