f you need to know the size of the Old World, you will find out that the sources are misleading. The Soviet Encyclopedia defines it as 11.609.000 sq. km, the Italian Treccani - as 9.460.000 sq. km, and Encyclopedia Britannica claims that it is 10.400.000. The difference in size is as big as seven ltaly's.
This kind of inaccuracy is unbelievable in the days when satellites can define the location of an object as small as a few feet in length, or even as small as an inch. In this case though, the reason for mistakes is not technical, precise borders in the Ural Mountains and in the Caucasus have never been defined.
I stop in front of an obelisk bearing the inscription "Europe-Asia". "They once called it the 'monument of tears'", says Edik, who is accompanying me on this journey of discovery in the Urals, the natural frontier between the two continents. Millions of people, passing this block of granite, have let out a cry of grief "Goodbye Europe !". From this point on is Siberia, once a place of exile with no return; today a place of optimism, with the discovery of such great natural wealth.
Siberia! Where numbers are concerned there are limits beyond which it is impossible to have a concrete idea. There are figures which our minds reject completely. How, for example, is it possible to have a real conception of the millions of square kilometres of Siberian land from the Urals to the Pacific? To really appreciate this you must travel them in person, at least partially. Or again, for Mediterranean people, no comprehensible difference between 30 and 60 degrees below zero exists: both these are outside the limits of their experience.
Today I can say that this world, yet to be fully discovered, is more real for me because of the closeness and intensity with which I have experienced it.
