is the most convenient border between the two continents. He also noticed that on each side of the Ural Mountains the rivers flow differently, the water is not the same, different kinds of fish inhabit the rivers. Oak trees grow in Europe on the 57th parallel, but can rarely be found in Asia, even further to the South.
The first officially erected pillar to mark the border between Europe and Asia was put up on the order of the Russian czar in 1837. It used to be near the town of Pervouralsk, not far from Yekaterinburg, one of the major industrial centers of modern Russia.
This is where the famous Moscow Postal Tract ended, this is where Siberia starts. At the time of the czars these pillars were called «the monuments of tears» since from this point on was the beginning of penal servitude. This is where the criminals were sent, this is where the dissidents were sent. An obelisk marks today, the spot where the original pillar used to be. The sight, of the obelisk moves every traveler who passes by.
Palkiewicz's southern expedition discovered several pillars erected by the border between Europe and Asia. There is a huge monument located 35 kilometers from Tagil, the town where famous Russian tanks are made. The monument displays the globe with a sputnik in the orbit. In another spot where Yermak claimed Siberian lands for Czar lvan the Terrible, there sits a pretty blue chapel. It was built in 1857 by the local gold-miners. All together there are over twenty monuments along the Ural watershed. They were erected spontaneously at different time. Their locations sometimes contradicts the official Soviet version according to which the riches of the Ural region are directly associated with Europe. For Moscow the border between the continents lies behind the Urals.
There is no Soviet power any- more. The truth remains indifferent to the changes in politics. The truth of the mater is this — today, a few centuries after this territory was originally developed by man, the issue of the border has not been resolved yet. This is felt in the South of the Urals, in Orenburg, in Kazakhstan. Some scientists believe that the border follows the river Emba, others claim it should be the Ural River.
Europe has been the center of the planet for many centuries. Even though European dominance subsided in the last hundred years, the philosophy of Euro-centrism lives on. Europe is eager to enter the 21 st century in a new capacity. Nevertheless, the ideal image of united Europe that will win back its key position in modern history, remains a fantasy. Today the Old World does not look too good, -economic contradictions, regional and ethnic conflicts, nationalism in on the rise.
The fact that the borders of the continent have yet to be defined, sound quite symptomatic. Europe has a long way to go before it becomes united, not just on paper, but in reality.
