We all know from school that the border between Europe and Asia runs down the Ural Mountains and the Ural River. The Big Soviet Encyclopedia defines the Western border of Asia as conditional and insists that it partially goes along the Ural Watershed, and partially through the foothills of the Urals. In the South, the River Emba forms the natural border.
Jacek Palkiewicz is a profession-al traveler, he participated in at least twenty expeditions all of which were extremely bold and resulted in obtaining remarkably complete scientific results. Jacek was crossing the major deserts, climbing the highest mountains, rafting down the white rivers. Recently he traveled to the Amazon riverhead. But he was always tortured by this question — Where is the border between the familiar Europe and the mysterious Asia?
Finally he decided to discover the truth, so he traveled to the northern parts of Russia where the Ural mountains give way to the flat tundra that stretches as far as the Karsk Sea.
Along with his Russian friends, Jacek traveled in lands that lie in the remote parts of Europe, at the gateway to Asia. The locals shrugged their shoulders when Jacek asked them whether they lived in Europe or in Asia.
People who live there don't bother themselves with this question. «Why would it matter?» — they exclaim. «We live poorly and there is not difference whatsoever where we live.» Nevertheless, most of the respondents agreed that mentally they are connected to Europe.
Jacek Palkiewicz and his friends came across a bunch of curious situations. For instance, a little village Ust-Kara right on the Karsk Sea shore is located in Europe. And a little airport from which the air-craft takes off for the civilized world, is located in Asia.
