In these more modern communities, lorries carry the packed gers to new pastures, and the shepherds do not follow their flocks on horseback, carrying the long poles which were once used for capturing wild horse, but ride IZ-350s, Soviet made motorbikes.
Mongolia is now counting on the development of its industrial base. 40,000 Russians live there and their ideology and way of life is pouring through the pores of Mongol society. Other Eastern Europeans are also present. Polish technicians are in charge of the mines, Bulgarians control leather production, Hungarians the production of meat. Germans supervise the roads and Czechs are involved in the transport industry. Foreigners are also prospectors and miners. The Mongolians themselves turn out more young people educated to degree level every year. Mongolia is also a centre of paleonthological research. Sixteen new species of dinosaurs, dating back 65-80 million years ago have been discovered in recent years.
For the man in the street the symbol of Mongolia's technical progress from shamanism to modern science is pilot captain Dzugderdemidiyn Gurragcza. On March 23rd 1981 captain Gurragcza piloted "Soyuz-39" in the company of a Soviet colleague, becoming a national hero.
