We had gone to bed at one at night (Finnish time) in our luxurious cabin, but at four o'clock Teije woke up by a call coming from the cabin loudspeaker telling that some people had to disembark now for Åland / Marianhamina.

Luleå, back to Tornio. Within a few hours we have caught two jet lags. In Sweden it is one hour earlier than in Finland but we lost this hour again returning to Finland. Time can be so confusing. But the sun doesn't set and it could have been in the afternoon when we return at Tornio.
Our Dutch neighbours have already arrived at the camping and they have stayed at Kalajoki last night; but they didn't have any sleep because of noise of all the drunk youths there. When we have heard their stories we are really glad we didn't stay at that place.
Sunday, June 23, Tornio - Arctic Circle (near Rovaniemi) - Ivalo
In the last few days we have made few pictures, but today we compensate for that. It is hard to decide which pictures we want to use for the site. The reason for making so many pictures today is the changing landscape: the boring cultivated woods disppear and a hilly tundra landscape appears with some rougher woods here and there.
First the road takes us to Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland. After a somewhat cloudy day yesterday, the sky is getting clearer today and we see lots of sun. This town was destroyed by the Germans in 1944 and when we walk through it, it is obvious that almost all buildings are quite new and modern.
Just north of Rovaniemi we pass the arctic circle, degenerated into a touristic attraction park. We only spend a few minutes to take the necessary touristic pictures.
According to this sign with distances, it is only 1972 kilometres to Amsterdam in a straight line; we have driven almost 4000 kilometres until now. What have we done wrong?
The date is June 23 and we have passed the arctic circle: the sun shall not set anymore! A strange experience, although we have no plans to stay up a whole night to witness this phenomena.
