It's a sign of the times when even in belize high speed internet access with memorydisk reading computers are available everywhere. well, well, indeed. i should perhaps have attempted to make my first update at a more sober time, but, what can you do when internet access is free if you order a drink...

well. we are a motley crew. my mum the aged hippie in her print flowing duds; my brother, the grungy rockstar in his torn jeans and ridiculous mustache; me, the narcissistic writer, dressed all in black even in the tropics. my dress is becoming gradually more modest, however, as i attempt to ward off the overt sexuality of this place. i only wore the heels five minutes into the country, as a peanut gallery of sixteen-year-old boys pointed out their provocity. yes, i anticipated this, and i'm actually handling it better than i thought i would... i neither want to be a bitch nor encourage people, so i just smile, nod, maybe flirt passively if they're mildly cute, but for the most part, ignore.
the cultural diversity here is amazing. you have a whole mix of creoles, mayans, mestizos, a startlingly large mennonite population, many asian folk, white expatriots
the ferry we took from amburgeise caye
from the states and england, and many others. you find yourself speaking spanish one moment and staring blankly at creole the next from the same person. we met a family today... master li, who approached us about kung fu air massage, his adorable 3 1/2 year-old boy nien who became taken with me and my camera, and his mayan wife. we talked with them a long time. nien has a tumor, which master li dedected through massage, but nothing can be done until he's six.
we snorkeled on a beautiful reef today and swam among nurse sharks and sting rays. sting rays are soft, springy, smiley, and very friendly. a flat, slimey puppy. a beutiful puerto rican intellect dove with us. i was quite entinced. we lost him, however.
i'm supposed to be getting certified to scuba tomorrow but i have an inner ear infection. we'll see if it gets better.
