updating so soon was not on the game plan but i hiked into town today to try to rent a bike and nearly gave myself heat stroke so i came in for a coke and to work on last night's tipsy entry. i'm still sorting out this interface.

my sinuses are still upset so mum and brad are out scuba diving at the moment. i was frustrated but decided a bike ride around the island would be a fine replacement. now if i can only find a bike...

walking in i was reflecting how odd it is to be in a place like this in the offseason. i took the beach into town and i ran into all of a few dozen people the whole way out in front of their hotels and resorts. untouched white sand everywhere; taxi cabs begging to take you (you think perhaps they might lessen some of the "gringo discount"...); beach bars with eight people giggling in the prime hours of the night. i can't imagine these small streets packed with people though. well, i can, but i don't want to.

we met a few interesting people last night. the owner of the bar 'wet willy's' (it was out on the end of a pier) we ended up in went off when mum said she wanted to live there... apparently he's ex-cia and only ended up here because of that but bought a bunch of property and now has to stay. he babbled about all of the cocaine cartels and how four men run the country and how much the locals loathe the gringos, even if they smile. he was a little drunk and we weren't sure how much of what he was saying was true but he seemed somewhat earnest. sometime after that an army boy came up, trying to encourage us to help him "start a party" and told us about how he and his buddies had been out playing in a helicopter, taking pictures through infared goggles, and landed in the middle of an ancient mayan ruin they'd been to earlier in the day. they were, of course, menaced by belizian soldiers with machine guns and i just laughed at him about that. they could have so easily destroyed something...

there is a picture in last night's bunch... the chicken drop. i feel i should explain. the world famous chicken drop took place next to us at dinner. everyone gets a number and they drop a chicken inside of this little pen on a square with a bunch of numbers. everyone incites the chicken until the chicken shits on one of the squares. the number... the winner. then the chicken is placed into a wicker basket until they have another hundred numbers sold. so silly.

i feel whole again and it's time to find a bike. audieu.
