El Rancho. So did the Cal Bears until the hotel was torn down. Sadly, with these changes much of Santa Rosa's "south side character" has been lost forever - replaced by the boring sprawl of urban congestion.
If you are observant you can still see some of the old hotels surrounded by old palm trees. There were many good times on this Ave, when the Raiders used to practice at the El Rancho.
Macdonald Ave located mostly north of the downtown is a neighborhood from an era long ago. There are many stately mansions all quite unique in appearance. The Macdonald mansion is huge and is the most impressive. This is a beautiful area to walk.
The Roseland district is the closest thing to a suburb of Santa Rosa. Parts of this district are quite run down and dirty but progress is being made in improving the look of this area.
The Fountain Grove district is one of Santa Rosa's newer communities. This area is built in the hills above northern Santa Rosa. There is a golf course and a few industrial buildings here.
Sonoma County has many many micro climates, not only temperature, but also in precipitation. For example Santa Rosa averages about 30 inches of rain a year, but if you travel 10 to 20 miles away, rainfall averages are much higher. Cazadero is in western Sonoma County and 2 years ago they received 117 inches of rain in one year. For the last two years they have received over 75 inches each year.
Santa Rosa tends to have a bit of fog in the summer months. Summer hot spells in Santa Rosa rarely last for more then a few days. The temperature reaches 100 or over in Santa Rosa maybe 10 days out of the year. However, the Upper Napa Valley, Healdsburg, or Cloverdale tend to be much warmer then Santa Rosa in the summer months. However, Santa Rosa is usually a bit warmer then these places in the winter.
