San Luis Obispo, California (Population 42,595) is located nearly midway between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. With urban sprawl kept to a minimum and almost ideal weather this town is a great place to live!



The mileage from San Luis Obispo along highway 101 to San Francisco is 240 miles, whereas driving down the 101 to Los Angeles is 200 miles. If you take highway one to San Francisco the drive is 260 miles. Highway one is a slower more scenic road then highway 101 and views of the ocean are guaranteed along highway 1. San Luis Obispo offers a perfect weekend getaway by car from either the Los Angeles area or San Francisco Bay Area.



San Luis Obispo is known for its college town atmosphere, but there is much, much more to San Luis then Cal Poly, the State University. San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, the name in its entirety, was founded as a mission town in 1772 by the catholic priest Father Junipero Serra. This is the fifth of the California missions, and the first to use tile.



San Luis Obispo is a town small enough that its very easy to find your way around. The downtown is small and very pedestrian friendly. With the recent expansion of one of the downtown parking garages, the demand for downtown parking has been somewhat lessened.



Every Thursday night (except in the case of inclement weather) the main street, Higuera, is closed to all vehicles and barbecues, produce vendors, and entertainment fill the streets. (6pm to 9pm) The tradition of the Thursday night market started in the 1800's when instead of barbecues the locals would gather around a large pit in the ground on Higuera street. Wild bears from the county and bulls were put into the pit and left to fight. After all was said and done the dead animals would be cleaned and cooked.
