Whiskeytown Lake and recreation area is located about 8 miles east on Highway 299 from downtown Redding. Part of this lake is situated over an old gold mining town. Gold panning is allowed in the recreation area but only with a permit purchased from the ranger station for a single dollar. There are several local creeks in the area where you can find some small pieces of gold. The lake is an ideal spot for water skiing or boating.
Bears can be seen in the hills near Whiskeytown. The largest bear paw print that I have ever seen was found near the north shoreline of the lake.
The visitor center is open from 9 to 5 during the summer months and the hours vary during the rest of the year. One item of interest is the memorial to John F. Kennedy located on western side of the lake. As you drive east on 299 toward Whiskeytown Lake you will drive up a long hill. At the top is a road leading to the left, that winds by the visitor center. Stay on this road for a mile or two. You will want to veer into the small parking lot in front of the memorial on the right side of the road. This memorial is located near the over flow drain for the lake. If you continue on the road which now winds away from the lake, a two miles from the visitor center you will pass a dirt parking lot on your left. This is the trailhead for a neat hike that leads to an abandoned gold mine. You will pass an old cemetery on your left. The road will soon turn to dirt and winds away from a large river. The main attractions along this road are the Kennedy Memorial and the hike to the gold mine.
The Jolly Green Giant Flea Market in the town of Anderson (just south of Redding) is a one of a kind flea market held in a huge painted green building - the vendors also extend to the outside of this building. This is an extensive permanent flea market in which there are at least a hundred plus vendors selling everything from used books, to antiques, to artwork to tools and much much more. With a little time and effort you can find some real deals on items.
