Lake Tahoe, The Lake, is the jewel of the Sierra Nevada's. At 6,226 feet above sea level Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. It is 12 miles wide, and 22 miles long. The Lake has a surface area of 191.6 square miles. The average depth of The Lake is 989 feet, while its deepest point is 1,645 feet. This is the third deepest lake in North America. Lake Tahoe contains about 40 trillion gallons of water. To put that number in perspective, that amount of water would cover the state of California in 14 inches of water.

The Tahoe Rim Trail has been worked on since 1984. This trail when completed will be 150 miles around Lake Tahoe. New: Completion date September 22, 2001! Major portions are already open and when completed the trail will incorporate 50 miles of the existing Pacific Crest Trail. For more information call PHONE NUMBER (702) 588-0686.



Tahoe State Recreation Area is a 13 acre waterfront park. The campground has 39 sites. The recreation area is open from May through September. The entrance to this recreation area is on Highway 28, just one mile north of Tahoe City. For more information call PHONE NUMBER (916) 583-3074.



Truckee River Regional Park is located on the banks of the Truckee River. There are two tennis courts, two volleyball courts, two playgrounds, an amphitheater, rodeo grounds, and a picnic area with barbecues. I've always wanted to bike around the Lake in one day. Highway 89 is quite narrow in places, but in other places there is a nice bike path. The total distance is 72 miles with lots of uphill and downhill riding. The bike path is mostly developed on the west shore, north and south of Tahoe City.



I have spent the first couple of weeks of every summer since I was born on the west shore of Lake Tahoe. There are truly some great hikes and bike rides behind the west shore of the Lake.
