Lake Tahoe, The Lake, is the jewel of the Sierra Nevada's. At 6,226 feet above sea level Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. It is 12 miles wide, and 22 miles long. The Lake has a surface area of 191.6 square miles. The average depth of The Lake is 989 feet, while its deepest point is 1,645 feet. This is the third deepest lake in North America. Lake Tahoe contains about 40 trillion gallons of water. To put that number in perspective, that amount of water would cover the state of California in 14 inches of water.

about 15 to 20 feet high. That 15 to 20 feet was the depth of the snow when the Donner Party was there. They had cut down the trees for fuel and for lodging. Those who visited the site one year later also found the grisly remains of various members of the party. The museum also celebrates Native American history and culture and is open year round. Kings Beach State Recreation Area consists of 7 acres and has a large gently sloping beach. The beach is popular for volleyball, sunbathing, and swimming. Jet skis, paddleboats, and rowboats are available for rent. A boat ramp is also available. Kings Beach Rec. Area is located on North Lake Blvd in Kings Beach. Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park is one of the premier biking spots in the country. The park consists of 14,262 acres, three miles of shoreline, scenic lakes, and beaches. Brochures are available at the visitor center. Boat launching facilities are available at Sand Harbor and Cave Rock. Sugar Pine Point State Park is 2300 acres and is located on Lake Tahoe's west shore, one mile south of Tahoma. They offer 11 miles of hiking trails, a fishing pier, and two miles of beaches.
