Lima and Pisco
A long flight – we travelled seven hours back in time and around the clock – took us to Lima, which at first sight was not very attractive.
We already heard that our schedule had been changed and that we would travel on to Pisco the next morning, so we would not be able to find out if Lima had anything better to offer.
The first thing I noticed in Peru was a lot of horn blowing, however that is not he impatience of impolite drivers, it is a way for taxis to acquire customers.
The drive from the airport to the hotel Casa de los Sanchez showed us huge houses protected by high walls and fences, and enormous stores with colour television sets and washing machines. I wonder how many people can afford that in Lima?
We will have little time to take it easy and relax the next few weeks. But then I deliberately did not choose a vacation on a Spanish costa.
Around six a.m. the following morning we went through a little door (watch your head!) to enter the bus station and about half an hour later we were driving over the Panamerican Highway with an unexpected luxurious bus into a completely different world: barren, dusty hillsides of an incredible beauty.
Our hosts at the hotel San Jorge in Pisco were very nice people and during our first lunch here I really enjoyed my Arroz a la Cubana (rice with fried banana).
Evidently, when you are in Pisco, you have to try the Pisco Sour; I loved it!
Parácas - Islas Ballestas
Together with our guide Juan we left for Parácas at one o'clock. Another desolate moon landscape, where the colours of the hills blended from pale yellow to red and brown, and it looked as if a haze was hanging over them.
We saw our first animals, alive and dead: flamingo's, pelicans, a dead seal.
