My summer of 2003 was a very exciting one. I went to Jonquière, Quebec to learn French for 5 weeks, and with only a few days to prepare (including a party at my friend Paul's cottage in between) I was off to Accra, Ghana landing July 1 (Canada Day, and also Ghanaian Independance Day). After that, within 3 days I was back at Ottawa to complete my Economics degree, so it was a very action-packed summer.

New Arrivals

At the beginning of the week, a new trainee arrived from Estonia (he has a management traineeship at a hotel). We got a group to the airport to pick him up, and then he didn't see us, so after he talked to an airport guy, one of us went up to see if it was him (since we didn't know what he looked like). Sure enough, it was, so picked him up and took him out for his first dinner. After a day of settling in, we took him to his first day at work (all of this is part of what AIESEC does for its trainees).

Today I went to the beach and enjoyed the rough water. If you go out about 100m, the water is for the most part just waist level or below, but when the waves come in, they can come up to your head. I discovered that its really cool to have your head right near the water (even when it is low) and as the waves are coming in, you can hear the water as its rolling and it makes really cool sounds (that you don't hear when you stand up). Then as the wave comes if you can catch the front of it just right you can ride it pretty far (like 20m). This is just on your belly by the way. There's some people with boogie boards that can go pretty far with them. I also bought some local art from a beach guy (the artist) and enjoyed the beats of musicians buskin on the beach.

Adventures in the Northern Region

This past weekend I made the adventure into the Northern Region of Ghana. Our trip plan was to go up to Tamale, then to Mole National Park from there. Spend a few days at the park, then back to Tamale, and then to Kumasi to spend a few days with the AIESEC local there and finally back to Accra.

We started our trip to Tamale at 9pm Thursday night. This was supposed to be a 12 hour trip but I guess the bus driver was pushing it because we got there within 10 hours (7am). Maybe our stops were shorter and the lack of traffic in big cities ...
