My summer of 2003 was a very exciting one. I went to Jonquière, Quebec to learn French for 5 weeks, and with only a few days to prepare (including a party at my friend Paul's cottage in between) I was off to Accra, Ghana landing July 1 (Canada Day, and also Ghanaian Independance Day). After that, within 3 days I was back at Ottawa to complete my Economics degree, so it was a very action-packed summer.

put a spell on it and said that the day the sword was removed would mean the end of the Ashanti Kingdom. Many people have tried to remove the sword (including Mohamed Ali). They built a hospital at the site of the sword and they tried to use bulldozers to remove the sword, but apparently it would disapear and after they bulldozed the area it would re-appear again, so they built the hospital around it. My time in Kumasi was a lot of fun and the hospitality was great. After spending a few days there I came back to Accra to spend my last 2 weeks of my stay here.

Coming to an end...

Well everyone, it seems my time here in Ghana is coming to an end. In a few days I will hop on a plane and fly home. I'm hoping to make it out of the airport at Heathrow since I have a 10 hour stopover, and if something exciting happens, I'll be sure to write it up. Most recently some funny things have happened to me. The whole idea behind the "AIESEC Experience" is to go to another place, but not just for a visit. The idea is to stay long enough to really experience a new culture and get integrated into the way of life in that place.

The other day, I was with a few AIESEC members (one from Canada, and one from Ghana) and we were in Osu (an area of town frequented by ex-pats and tourists, so prices tend to be high there. We were dressed up because we were going to a marketing meeting so we looked like we probably had well paying jobs and therefore a reasonable amount of money. Now when it comes to bargaining with Ghanaians, everything comes into play. If you look like you have money (either you look like a foreigner, or you are dressed well -- both of which was the case for us) then prices will always start higher for you. Now we needed to get a cab from Osu back to our place on Orgle Road, and that would normally cost 12,000-15,000. The higher end being if you are starting in Osu and/or depending on the time of day/week. ...
