7 October 2003
I’m now the proud owner of one of the best digital cameras produced by Canon.
I left Melbourne via the Caulder Highway and drove to Castlemain. Along the way I stopped a few times to try out the EOS-10D.
I arrived at the Castlemaine pre-school just before eight in the morning and set up my equipment in an office. By time the director arrived I had already been given the number of children that needed to be photographed each morning. Sixty children before eleven-thirty was near impossible. After a chat, the director said I did not have to take portraits of the younger children, which helped somewhat.
By time ten o’clock arrived I had moved into the last of the five rooms and the children were older. These children didn’t take too long and I was finished by the required time.
The afternoon was spent in Castlemaine where I took some shot of the buildings and flowers in the local park.
More tables were occupied in the restaurant tonight. As I drank my beer I watched them order. Then spent an extra dollar when I ordered my meal.

I only had enough milk for a half decent coffee this morning and waited for my breakfast to be delivered at the requested seven o’clock. It hadn’t arrived by time I left for work forty-five minutes later.
This morning was a repeat of yesterday. By time I got to the older children I could tell the teacher was stressing out because I was getting there so late in the morning. It was at this point in time that I decided to get in touch with my company and request more help the next day.
Back at the Harcourt Motel I sat down and had the breakfast that had arrived some time during my absence.
In the afternoon I went for a fifty-kilometre drive to relax. Following a map that indicated relics and points of interest in the area.
In the 1800s thousands of people from all over the world worked the gold diggings. Some became very rich, many didn’t. I photographed to my hearts content without fear of wasting my shots. Digital photography is great; it gives you the freedom to experiment. Since getting to this part of Victoria, I have taken over seventy images. That’s the number I have kept, many more have been deleted. It’s like learning photography all over again.

I arrive at eight again this morning and was well into photographing the younger children when the other photographer arrived around nine-fifteen. I suggested he work in the two rooms where the older children were and I continued in the other three rooms. By ten-thirty I had finished my rooms and helped the other photographer finish the last room, just as it started to rain.
We were out of the centre by eleven-thirty and I agreed to take the exposed films back to the studio in Melbourne.
